Our Love Triangle
Synopsis
“Our Love Triangle” is a miniseries with 10 episodes. The story revolves around Yoo Hae Rin (Kim Shi Kyung), a student at a university studying theatre arts. The story starts with a play going on, and the leading cast is Hae Rin and Ji Woo Jin (Ahn Se Min). They are the main couple on stage and a mysterious male is purchasing a ticket. On stage, Hae Rin looks up and sees the male. Even though he is wearing a hat, she says his name – Cha Eun Hwan (Gongchan) – just as Woo Jin turns to kiss her. The play ends and thus begins the love triangle between Hae Rin, Woo Jin (Hae Rin’s current love interest), and Eun Hwan (Hae Rin’s old flame).
Main Cast
Gongchan is listed as the only cast member of “Our Love Triangle,” probably because he is the most popular since he is both an actor and singer; he is the youngest member of the band B1A4. Eun Hwan’s mom is a famous actress and apparently helps him set up acting gigs, when he returns it is declared that he is going to star in a series as the main lead, but no one knows what drama he will be starring since he keeps his projects a mystery. Eun Hwan doesn’t get along with his mother, because everyone thinks he gets everything for free, when actually he works really hard. However, the female lead Kim Shi Kyung is equally adorable with a huge smile. Ahn Se Min was the third part of this love triangle.
Shared Past with Eun Hwan
Hae Rin and Eun Hwan were the best of friends in high school. But things change when Eun Hwan suddenly begins his military enlistment. Hae Rin starts school and meets Woo Jin. She seems to notice a pull of attraction towards Woo Jin, but just as suddenly, Eun Hwan returns and she tries to denies her feelings for him. Two years ago, before Eun Hwan enlisted, they have a night where they were both tipsy and shared some heated kisses. Hae Rin mistakenly thinks that they went all the way that night and that Eun Hwan dipped out on her in the morning. Because of that, Hae Rin tries her best not to get close to him again. However, Eun Hwan knows what really happened and wants to get closer to her.
Son Min Joo
Son Min Joo (Sei) is Hae Rin’s roommate. She has a crush on Woo Jin, but she knows that Woo Jin likes Hae Rin. Both Hae Rin and Min Joo audition for a series called “Destined Melo.” Hae Rin gets the part of the female lead and Min Joo is super jealous. Min Joo is jealous of all the attention that Woo Jin is giving Hae Rin and she tells him that maybe he should tell Hae Rin not to do the drama. That way, Min Joo could have the main role and that would prevent Hae Rin from acting with Eun Hwan. Min Joo tries to stab Hae Rin in the back by saying that she only got the role by being close to Eun Hwan when it is revealed that he is going to be the main lead. Eun Hwan has the producers leak Hae Rin’s audition tape and the audience falls in love with her ability to convey emotion.
Park Seo Ah
Eun Hwan’s mother wants to change the female lead to Park Seo Ah (Kim Jee Won), another classmate from high school who has a large Instagram following and likes Eun Hwan. Seo Ah is jealous of Hae Rin and the relationship she has with Eun Hwan. Seo Ah has played manipulative tricks on Hae Rin since high school to cause her harm, such as convincing Eun Hwan to tell Hae Rin that they were dating so that she would get jealous and admit her true feelings for him. Spoiler alert - that doesn’t work. Seo Ah is that frenemy. Eun Hwan finds out that Seo Ah is joining the media company he works with, so he invites her out to ask about it and they run into Hae Rin. Seo Ah grabs Eun Hwan’s arm and makes it seem like they are dating.
The Truth Revealed
The truth is finally revealed when Hae Rin celebrates her birthday and gets drunk. Eun Hwan confesses he still has feelings her for and that nothing that happened 2 years ago was a mistake. He puts her birthday gift on the table for her and leaves. Hae Rin wakes up the next morning with only vague memories of the night before. She sees the necklace box, but thinks it is the gift from Woo Jin. She puts the necklace on and then goes to find him to thank him. When she runs into Eun Hwan, he asks her if she likes the necklace. She says it was a gift from Woo Jin, and Eun Hwan realizes she does not remember the last night at all.
Hae Rin finally meets up with Woo Jin, but when he pulls out a different necklace as his birthday gift for her, she realizes the necklace must be Eun Hwan. In that moment, some of the memories come back, so she leaves Woo Jin to find Eun Hwan. When she finds him, she asks him how he really feels about her, and they admit their feelings to each other (finally). YAY! Hae Rin also finds out that on that night two years ago, she got completely drunk and passed out and that nothing happened between them. Eun Hwan was scared of something happening, so he ran. His actions were to protect her. He gives her a ring and tells her that they are officially dating.
All Storylines Tied Up Nicely
Woo Jin cannot stomach the idea of Hae Rin dating Eun Hwan so he goes into the military to serve his mandatory enlistment. Min Joo, while drunk, admits to Hae Rin all the awful things that she did out of jealousy while she was supposed to be her friend – like suppling the photos that made the media go crazy over the relationship between her and Eun Hwan. Hae Rin admits that she loves Min Joo and wants to be her friend, but that she cannot forgive her right now and needs time and space apart.
Meanwhile, Seo Ah gets caught lying about beauty product contracts for her Instagram page and the media label releases her contract. Seo Ah then disappears, which means no more drama from her. YAY!
And a few months later, Hae Rin, Eun Hwan, and Min Joo all gather for Woo Jin’s birthday. The four are all smiles and clearly friends again. It was a sweet ending.
Final verdict: WATCH
“Our Love Triangle” is a solid WATCH. Although it currently is not ranked very high, it is a cute series with super short episodes. The title, “Our Love Triangle” is misleading, as the story actually involves several love triangles – the main love triangle of Eun Hwan, Hae Rin, and Woo Jin; the love triangle between Eun Hwan, Hae Rin, and Park Seo Ah; and the love triangle between Hae Rin, Woo Jin, and Min Joo. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. There was a weird background story about Woo Jin, who used to play baseball and Hae Rin, who used to do ballet, and how they met in an earlier time by him saving her from being hit by a car. I really feel like that whole part could have been left out of the story. I mean come on writers; you seriously don’t need every Korean troupe to make us like the storyline. Trust me this story has plenty without that part added. I’m glad it has a happy ending and that – in the words of Eun Hwan – good wins over evil.
